I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?
It takes strength in admitting that one needs help. Not every one of us is born with the same mental resources. Therapy helps people develop certain skills so that they can navigate their life with much ease.
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
Talking to family or friends is a two way street, whereas therapy is a one way street. The sole purpose and focus is on you and your problem and how to make things better. Also, when you talk to a friend or a family member, their advice might be according to their own personal experiences and might not be applicable in your situation. But when you talk to a therapist, they help you dive deep into your own experiences and let you find the solutions of your problems on your own.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Not every case is severe to require medications. Therapy gives you a healthy outlet and equips you with resources that you would be able to use in future, long after the therapy sessions are terminated.
How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
You role in the session depends upon the approach your therapist uses. Each person has different issues and goals which determine their role in the session.
How long will it take?
Unfortunately, this is not possible to determine this in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time therapy can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on the nature of the problem, your desire for personal growth, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counselling in the first place.
I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success.
